.
The Zodions’ origins date from 1963 at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire and three of our current members: Dave, Martyn and Ken - are Old Abingdonians. Radiohead and Foals are perhaps two of the more famous bands that came out of Abingdon School albeit in later times.
.
The advent of the electric guitar caused an explosion of bands in that heady period as young people took up the challenge to make modern music more interesting. Abingdon was no exception and the band takes its name from two such school bands, the Scorpions and the Zodiacs from whence present day members originated.
.
As teenagers, the boys worked jobs out of school hours to buy their guitars, begged & borrowed gear, hitched lifts and hired taxis to play venues large and small all over Oxfordshire. The band was then taken on by the Ricky Dirges Agency leading to gigs backing such illustrious bands as the Swinging Blue Jeans, Long John Baldry with Reg Dwight on piano and the New Vaudeville Band of 'Winchester Cathedral' fame.
.
Eventually, after about 5 years, band members began to disappear off to higher education and careers in engineering, accountancy, banking, teaching and the Royal Navy all the while keeping in touch and occasionally getting together. Then, second career moves afforded some time and when some significant birthdays began to come along, the opportunity to reform the band in 2007 co opting the occasional talented friend could not be missed and so it came to pass.....!
.
Current members of the band:
.
Ken Mein plays rhythm guitar - sometimes bass
Dave Letley plays bass guitar - sometimes rhythm guitar
